A modern-day virtual reality game turns deadly in David Morrell's latest contemporary thriller. Lovers Frank and Amanda are kidnapped while attending a lecture in New York on time capsules and become separated, running for their lives. Whether they live or die (or are reunited) depends on their ability to play the game, "Scavenger". Amanda is captured and grouped with four others who were all hand-selected for their survival skills by the invisible Game Master. They are placed in explosive suits and transported to an open river valley in the West, with the Game Master's instructions coming through their headsets. They must survive, find clues, and get to the final destination in just 40 hours to win the game. In his own separate battle in New York, Frank searches for Amanda, eventually tracking her down in Wyoming, where he joins the Scavenger game to find the twisted Game Master before he kills them all.
Set aside some time to read this book because once you start it, you won't want to put it down. The suspense is incredible, the action fast-paced, and as an added bonus, we learn a lot, such as the history of time capsules (and all of the time capsules referenced in the book are real.) We also learn about the video game industry and its evolution, gaming theory and alternate realities. Thought-provoking concepts and great entertainment, all in one book.
